Building confidence, integrity and respect through sport

Sport is an integral part of life at ESMS. While we achieve considerable success at a regional and national level our fundamental aim is to inspire, in every child, a lifelong passion for physical activity that will stay with them throughout their adult life.

The breadth of our sporting programme enables every child to find a sport they love. The large number of teams we provide means that every child who wants to play a particular sport has the opportunity to be part of a team and play in competitions, We also offer many opportunities to tour internationally.

Our team of physical education teachers are highly qualified with many having personal experience of competing at a professional level.  Many of our specialist staff are also involved in national coaching roles. Together they cultivate a growth mindset culture, encouraging pupils to strive to improve and beat their personal best.

Our sporting facilities are extensive, comprising a state-of-the-art hockey AstroTurf pitch, cricket squares, summer athletics facilities, tennis courts and well-equipped sports halls. We also have a 25m swimming pool and a strength and conditioning suite. Our Rugby programme makes use of technology to enhance performance, including Coach Logic and video analysis and our Elite Performers Programme helps support our high performing pupils.

The entire sport programme is modelled around our five school values, to help students develop as good people as well as good sportspeople. Lessons inspire resilience, confidence and maturity and teach children how to respond to victory and defeat. We instil the belief that children can learn from every game and every mistake and this helps them grow as a player and as a person off the pitch.

We loved seeing the students achieve successes across a wide range of sports this year, including Boys Scottish Cup U16 Rugby winners and Inspiresport National 1 Whole School Conference Rugby winners, Girls Senior Schools Scottish Cup Hockey finalists, winner of the S1 Scottish Schools Basketball Cup and six medals and a trophy at this years’ Bath Cup. We also achieved our Cycling Friendly School Award this year.

The School has established a legacy of sporting achievement from nurturing British Lions to Olympic canoeists and we are extremely proud of those who have gone on to achieve such feats. However, we are just as proud of the pupils who continue to play sport long after they have left school.

Our drive to get young people to get active goes beyond the school gates. At the start of the session, we held Scotland’s first Sports In Her Shoes event for schools across Edinburgh, to help address the barriers facing young women playing Sport. Our MES PE department also co-runs community sports days in partnership with SMC RFC for children with special needs. Students have attended Scottish Disability Sports Training to enable them to organise and run the events.
