Stewart's Melville College and Loretto School went head to head for the Brewin Dolphin Shield final on Wednesday 6th February at Murrayfield and we are delighted to announce that our boys won the Shield, beating Loretto 22-14.
Loretto started the stronger and threw everything at our Rugby First XV defence which held strong. The balance of play after 20 minutes started to shift towards us and with some expansive play and direct running we managed to open the scoring with a fine team try created for Ali Greig to finish off. Andrew Manson converted the try.
We maintained the pressure on Loretto and worked our way up field to score another well worked try by Michael Miller just before half time. With a 14-0 lead the team knew that the next score was vital and a clever kick by Jack Pennell forced the opposition to concede a lineout close to their own line. The Stewart's Melville College forwards did the rest with a great catch and drive lineout allowing Fraser Christie to touch down. A further penalty by Andrew Manson 5 minutes later saw the school lead 22-0 with 15 minutes to go. To Loretto's credit they came back strongly and scored two good tries of their own to make the final score 22-14 to Stewart's Melville College. Fraser Christie received the man of the match award and it was a fitting way for our S6 boys to finish their school season.
