ESMS are excited to announce that our schools have achieved a Green Flag Award from Keep Scotland Beautiful through their Eco-Schools programme for the third consecutive year! The Green Flag Award is an internationally recognised achievement for schools and nurseries that are committed to learning about and promoting sustainability.
Keep Scotland Beautiful are a Scottish environmental charity, with visions of a “clean, green, sustainable Scotland.” Their Eco-Schools programme is the largest sustainable schools programme in the world with over 19 million children, young people and educators engaged worldwide across 67 different countries.
The Schools decided to focus on the following three topics for their application: Litter, Health & Wellbeing and Global Citizenship.
Examples of the green initiatives undertaken by the Schools which supported our application included:
- Community litter picks such as our Sixth Form’s litter pick at Cramond during COP26
- The introduction of a stationery recycling scheme
- Increasing the number of vegetarian options available at lunchtimes
- Hosting sales of eco-friendly products such as bamboo toothbrushes and shampoo bars
- Plant sales (in collaboration with the SMC Gardening Club)
We are very proud of those in our ESMS community who have been championing green initiatives across our schools, such as our eco-committees. This third consecutive Green Flag Award is a testament to your fantastic work.
