Medal Haul for SMC at Scottish Schools Athletics Championships

Boys from Stewart’s Melville College picked up eight individual medals, three team medals and set a new Scottish record in this year’s Scottish Schools Athletics Championships.

The championships, which took place at Hutcheson Grammar School and Grangemouth Stadium on the 3rd, 10th and 11th  of June, saw Calum Henderson (S4) take gold in the U17 400m and silver in the U17 Long Jump making Calum No. 2 for Long Jump in the UK. Sam Brown took gold in the U17 800m and is now ranked No. 3 in the UK. Kieran Ngwenya won gold in the U14 High Jump and Billy Doyle the same in the U15 300m. Last month Billy won the same event in the East of Scotland District Championships beating the previously held championship record. Joe Ewing, Duncan Hood and Harry Stevens each took bronze in the U15 1500m, U14 Shot Putt and U14 Discus respectively to bring the total number of individual medals won to eight.

In the team events at the same championships, the boys won the U14 silver, U15 silver and U17 gold medals and set a new Scottish record in the 4x100m relay. The boys also enjoyed success at the Scottish Schools Pentathlon Championships where Calum Henderson took U17 bronze and Howie Bell won the U20 gold.

At the Edinburgh Secondary Schools Athletics Championships which took place at Meadowbank Stadium on Wednesday 8th June the Stewart’s Melville College boys also picked up 36 medals in total.

SMC Head of Athletics, Mr Hayden Lingard said of the boys’ achievements “This year’s success at the regional and district championships has highlighted the strength and depth of our programme from top to bottom, as well as the positive and hardworking attitude of our athletes. Participation levels are high and the boys have really bought into the culture, which they themselves have developed over the past few years.”
