Mary Erskine student Lauren Ross, an S6 A-Level Fine Art student, has been selected from 1,500 applicants to go through to the Scottish heats of the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition. The judges, all professionals of the art world, were unanimous in liking Lauren's portrait and couldn't believe someone so young could paint such an ethereal and surreal self-portrait.
The competition will be televised, and the Scottish heats will take place at the National Museum in Edinburgh on July 8, 2014 where Lauren and 19 fellow competitors will have four hours to paint or draw a celebrity sitter. The celebrity sitter and the judges will then choose a winning portrait to be displayed in the National Portrait Gallery in London and the winner will go through to compete in the semi-finals in London. The last round of the competition will take place in September in Paris where the finalists will compete for a £10,000 commission to paint another, even more famous, celebrity.
Good luck Lauren!
