We are excited to announce that our History Department at The Mary Erskine School has been awarded a Quality Mark from The Historical Association, becoming the first school in Scotland to receive this prestigious award.
The Historical Association is the UK national charity for history, supporting the teaching, learning and enjoyment of history. The charity’s Quality Mark is an award that recognises the excellence of history provision at primary and secondary schools across the world.
At ESMS, we believe that history is vitally important because it helps to develop analytical and critical thinking. Teaching our pupils about different events, cultures and human motivations from history will enable them to learn from past mistakes. We are delighted that our passionate History Department at MES have received international recognition for their hard work and dedication.
MES received a visit from an assessor in early December, who observed lessons and spoke with pupils to evaluate the History Department based on the following five criteria:
- Learning and Teaching
- Leadership
- Curriculum
- Achievement
- Enrichment
After a rigorous process of audits, portfolio reviews and in-person analysis, the Historical Association decided to award the MES History Department with a Silver Quality Mark.
Amanda Ferguson, Head of History at The Mary Erskine School, said: “The journey to becoming a Quality Mark department is meticulous and the award is testament to the excellent History provision we offer our learners. We would like to thank all History pupils, particularly those who met with the assessor, for the value they place on the subject through their hard work and engagement. This Quality Mark very much belongs to them too.”
