Congratulations to Skye Fletcher, winner of the Hymans Robertson Prize for Initiative and Enterprise, and to the rest of the Stewart's Melville College Young Enterprise team Resolution, for their hard work and dedication to their project this year. This year the team decided to venture from the usual path of selling hoodies, t-shirts, calendars etc. and instead set up a social enterprise event with the aim of promoting science among young people in a deprived area. Resolution used the annual Young Enterprise Scotland Christmas Market as an opportunity to gather opinion and feedback on their proposed endeavour, and found that respondents were overwhelmingly positive about the project. Muirhouse Youth Development Group (MYDG) was selected as their chosen charity to work with, and the team set about raising the funds necessary to deliver the outreach programme to the children there.
The project proved to be a great success and was beneficial for both the Young Enterprise team and the children of the MYDG. Throughout the course of the year, Resolution team members (Hussam Ali, Skye Fletcher, Scott Watson, Hamish Douglas, Scott McCarte, Jordan Houston and David Lamont) experienced the full range of emotions and challenges involved in running a business. From the initial set up phase, to raising funds, managing their time, working as a team, and dealing with conflict, each team member learned invaluable skills which will stand them in good stead for university and the world of work beyond.
Special thanks to Hymans Robertson, an independent pension, risk and benefits consultancy who, support Young Enterprise at ESMS through sponsorship and the provision of work experience for our winning candidates.
