Cinematography, Suspense and the Book Trailer Battles

The Mary Erskine girls had great success at the 2016 Scottish Book Trust's Book Trailer competition with eight teams taking part this year by writing, directing, producing and editing a trailer for one of the books named in the Scottish Children's Book Awards.

Congratulations to Emma Drury, Holly McIntosh, Isla Semple, Sonia Marshall and Fiona Johnston becoming overall winners of the competition with their trailer showcasing 'The Nowhere Emporium' by Ross MacKenzie. The Scottish Book Trust judges said of the trailer, "A fantastic trailer which takes the bold approach of focusing almost entirely on the setting of the novel as its main selling point, rather than focusing on characters or conflict. This trailer is an exemplary case of 'showing, not telling', where hardly any expository text is used and the group have relied entirely on clever shots to convey the wonder and mystery of the Emporium. As well as this, the trailer is superbly paced, with the visuals choreographed perfectly to correspond with rises and falls in the dynamics of the music. A thoroughly deserving winner!"

Congratulations also go to Georgia Williamson, Aileas Macdonald, Holly Pearson and to Laura Beveridge, Fiona Brown, Meg Saunders and Emily Seymour-Jackson whose trailers were Highly Commended by the Scottish Book Trust.
