SMC Bring Home Debating Trophy for Fourth Time in Seven Years

On Monday 7 November two teams of debaters represented SMC at the Glasgow University Championships which is one of the three Scottish majors, involving more than 40 schools from all over the country.

Both pairings had a successful day, recording commendable victories during the four rounds of debating. Indeed, Fraser Maclean S6 and Mark Ross S5, in what was his first taste of competition, showed real spirit to overcome the disappointment of losing two close calls in the first two rounds. However, most praise must be reserved for Tom Collins S5 (named as the top speaker on the day) and Hector McIntosh S4 whose run to the final saw them compete against and defeat a number of the best debaters in Scotland, including teams from  George Heriot’s School, Robert Gordon's College, George Watson’s College, Mearns Castle High School and St. Columba’s School.

In the final itself the boys formed the closing opposition to the motion “This House supports the military’s use of Facebook Live in combat situations.” It appealed to both of the boys and their superlative performance saw SMC bring home this slam title for the fourth time in seven years.
