Children build robots in Robotics Club

We are excited to introduce you to our Spring ‘Club of the Month’, the Robotics Club! Each week our ESMS Junior School pupils are given the exciting opportunity to step into the future, with the help of Ms Hewitt, our passionate Head of ICT, at ESMS Junior School.

We caught up with Ms Hewitt to find out more about the Robotics Club and what its members get up to!

  1. What do you get up to in Robotics Club?

We build robots using Lego Mindstorms and we code and automate them. We have also made use of Dash robots!

  1. Why did you want to start the Robotics Club?

Robotics is a great opportunity to give children a practical way to create, innovate, persevere and solve problems.

By making a robot and attempting to get it to do what they want, the children need to work collaboratively, problem solve and think in ways that will prepare them for life outside school.

It makes me happy to see the children so engaged and to watch them grow in confidence and independence as they overcome difficulties.

  1. When and where do you meet?

We meet on a Thursday after school, for 1 hour, in the Digital Learning Room.

  1. What has been your proudest achievement as a club?

Seeing all members of the club totally focused on planning, building and defeating each other’s robots in their own robot wars tournament!

  1. How many members do you have?

We have had 20 children taking part in the club this year!

  1. What are your goals as a club?

To have fun working with others, creating robots, solving problems and challenging each other.

Thank you to the Robotics Club for taking the time to catch up with us!
